Cyanotype on T-shirt 2016

She runs in forward motion but remains ever still, without intended progress. Somehow, she becomes a façade of confidence and direction, by ill transgression no less, and what once was freedom to her becomes tilted askew, faded into the past unrecorded, and ignored.  Home, like the wire for the free bird remains at her back, with no way to turn and check in on it.  She is homeless again, and she is frozen. Only the oblong blob of mystery lies ahead.  She must accept this organized chaos; she is America, and she always changes.

Unlike the the run of the mill screen-printing process, the Cyanotype process is photographic in nature.  In fact, it was the astronomer and chemist John Frederick William Herschel (Brittish, 1792–1871) who revealed this discovery to the world in his paper “On the Action of the Rays of the Solar Spectrum on Vegetable Colours and on Some New Photographic Processes,” which was presented to the Royal Society of London on June 16, 1842.  It is the second form of photographic printing put into practical use.

Thank you for your interest in my artistic use of it today!  Please be aware that the process is rather inconsistent, and highly susceptible to variants in the tones of blue it produces. No two shirts will look the same.  Though permanent on fabric, the image will fade a bit over time.  All of this is part of great charm and uniqueness it lends to my imagery!  So glad to have you here!

To boost longevity, please hand wash with non-phosphate soaps. Enjoy!
